Chicago Time

Decided I'm going to take some pictures each day here and just post them. I'm currently focused on searching for a car for my road trip, and I've decided I'm going with a minivan. Yes. I know. It's a weird soccer-mom thing to do, but I'm planning to take my drums, golf clubs, bike, and much more in the car, so I figured a big car was best. Also, I'm going to have people meeting me at different points on my trip so a bigger car is best. We'll see how it goes :) Also, some tough news about my cat, Bocce. My friend Kali was happy to take Bocce before I left in Jan, but Kali has a cat and the two are not getting along lately. So now I have to find a new home for Bocce before I leave next Thursday. Not going to be so easy, but I'm doing my best. My days have been very busy with seeing friends, going to my favorite places in the city, car shopping, and just enjoying my time. Tonight my band plays at a great little bar in Lincoln Park, and then tomorrow I fly to Vegas to be with my family for my gramma's 100th birthday on Sunday. Gonna be great!!

No, It's Not (poem written on train from Venice to Vienna)

No, It’s Not
6/22/14

It’s not what you know
It’s how you learned it

It’s not where you go
It’s how you got there

It’s not when you arrive
It’s how you showed up

It’s not who you’re with
It’s whom you avoid

It’s not age that matters
It’s the wisdom of your years

It’s not how much you have
It’s how much you let go

It’s not the money
It’s the comfort

It’s not how you live
It’s how you overcome

It’s not the street that matters
It’s the direction you drive

It’s not always the same
It’s always the same game

It’s not notches in your bedpost
It’s how well you sleep at night

It’s not the hike that beats you
It’s the woods that get you lost

It’s not the flavor in the food
It’s the time you take to savor

It’s not the last thing you do in the day
It’s the first thing you think in the morning

It’s not the amount of hours you work
It’s the value of the time you’ve spent

It’s not how many people are around you
It’s who can’t live without you

It’s not the beat you’re playing
It’s the passion behind your music

It’s not the places you’ve been
It’s the places you feel at home

It’s not about having a light on when you get there
It’s about the warmth of the love inside you

It’s not a matter of time
It’s a matter of patience

It’s not the color of your skin
It’s knowing everyone is your kin

It’s not the peaks you climb
It’s the valleys you look down upon

It’s not the thrill of the hunt
It’s the hunted that kill your inside

It’s not the pictures you take with your camera
It’s the images emblazoned in your mind

It’s not the person you fall in love with
It’s the timing of when you met one another

It’s not winning that matters
It’s matter that wins the most

It’s not the Far East
It’s to the West too

It’s not about your culture
It’s the culture of your economy

It’s not the horse you’re riding
It’s how you treat it while you’re riding

It’s not the distance you cover
It’s the cover you need to distance yourself

It’s not how smart you are now
It’s how smart you’ve become

It’s not winning in the end
It’s ending the win with empathy

It’s not who’s on your team
It’s who’s in your corner

It’s not how many hours you’ve practiced
It’s the hours you practiced well

It’s not how well you know me
It’s…well…you know me

It’s not a wishing well
It’s well-wishers that foretell

It’s not the clothes you wear
It’s the wear in your clothes

It’s not the people you’ve met
It’s the people you can’t forget

It’s not the loss of love that hurts most
It’s the hurt of losing yourself

It’s not the direction you’re going
It’s directing those who’ve lost their way

It’s not what you say to me
It’s what I decide to hear

It’s not what you write
It’s who you show your writings

It’s not about death
It’s deathly scary not to live

It’s not time to end
It’s time to move on

It’s never me
It’s always we

Vienna - Full Circle

Reka has to catch a 2pm flight, so he plans to leave around 11. We get up at 10:30am, so we pack up our things and he grabs a water taxi to the airport. He’s cutting it close, but this is nothing new for Reka. It’s a bummer to see him go, but wow what a perfect person to have with me during my last days in Europe. Reka truly is a brother of mine. We will be friends forever. No goodbye. I leave him and then go back to the pizza place that we went to on Friday, and I sit next to a girl who’s by herself and reading. We start talking and she’s an engineer from Australia, but she’s living in Newcastle, England, and her job entails checking bridges to make sure they are built well. Interesting job. She’s leaving Venice later tonight so we agree to kill some time together. She shows me Rialto bridge, which I hadn’t seen the entire trip, so I thank her and then head to the train station in time for my 7.5 hour train to Vienna. Ugh. Not fun, but I gotta do it. There are some amazing views from the train, which gets my mind going. Creativity comes. Words write themselves down on paper. I will include a separate blog post for the poem I wrote. Felt great to be writing again. I’m going to really focus on writing a lot on my road trip this summer in the US. Back to right now though – I’m lucky and happy to see Isabella again, who’s been nice enough to let me stay at her place for the night. It’s nice to bring my European journey full circle, back to where I started a few months ago with my sister Stasha. Crazy to think about all the places I’ve been in these almost-three months. Wow. What a trip. I fly out tomorrow (Monday) at 10am and then I’m back in Chicago by 1:30pm. Incredibly excited to get back and enjoy a week with my friends and just hang out in Chicago when it’s nice weather. Might take a few days off writing when I get home because I need some down time, but I’ll make sure to write a little.

Lido Beach

Our initial plan for Saturday was to get up early and then head over to Lido beach, which is a 30-40 minute boat ride from Venice. We get up around 11:30am. OK, so the first part of our plan failed, but obviously we needed the sleep. There is a very cool mask shop directly across from our BnB, so we walk in there and check it out to start our day. Great masks. Amazing artistry. Apparently this is the mask store that provided all the masks in the Stanley Kubrick film, Eyes Wide Shut. Nice. We don’t buy anything but we ask the store owner how to get to Lido, and luckily the boat landing where Reka arrived also takes us directly to Lido. That was easy. As we walk out from the mask store we remember seeing a great little hidden restaurant while we were walking the day before, so we head over there and luckily it’s open. The restaurant, called Al Vecio Marangon has room for no more than 15-20 people inside this place. It has more character and style than any other restaurant I’ve seen in Italy. The waiter is incredibly nice. We order what becomes the best meal of my entire trip. Wow. Prosciutto and melon. Tuna carpaccio with white pears and arugula. White sauce lasagna with zucchini. Unreal. We wash it down with a nice rose wine. During lunch we sit next to a girl from Argentina who now lives in Milan, and her aunt, who runs a restaurant in Barcelona. Interesting crowd – very cool. Reka and I agree that we’re coming back here for dinner again. It’s our last night together. It’s my last night in Italy. Can’t take any chances on going to a subpar restaurant. We tell the waiter that we’ll be back tonight, and he bids us a good day – says he’ll see us later. We head to the water taxi stop and then jump on the next boat that comes bye (no more than 5 minutes wait). A 30-minute boat ride later and we’re in Lido – a nice beach-type community. We hit the beach and relax in the sun for a few hours. Swim. People watch. Peanut gallery. Always a good time. It’s not the nicest beach in the world, but it feels good on this hot day. After a few hours we head back towards the boat, but first we see a pool hall on our walk so of course we play a best-of-three match. I win the first handily. Reka the second. Then I squeak out the last win for the overall victory. We’re both pretty competitive guys, so it’s fun to get serious in the games. After that we grab a boat back to our BnB and then decide to grab a few slices of pizza as a snack before dinner. Reka secures a spot at an outside bar that’s showing the Argentina vs Iran world cup match, and I go get the slices. As I am walking back with our food I hear the crowd erupt in cheer as Argentina scores with 3 minutes left in the game. Wow. Crazy game. Lots of Argentinians at the bar, so it’s fun to hear their excitement. We hang for a bit and people watch, and then head back to the BnB to clean up and then head back to our favorite restaurant. The waiter greets us with a smile and says it will only be a few minutes. I use the bathroom and as I come out I see that Reka has made friends with a nice-looking Italian couple. They are actually from Padova, which is a town not far from Venice, and they just came into town for the day. Reka had preached to them about how fantastic the restaurant is, so they get excited to eat as well. We all have an Aperol spritz together, and they end up paying for ours. Too nice. Very sweet people. They sit down first, and then when it’s time for us to sit as well we’re luckily seated right next to our new friends. Her name is Annelisa and her boyfriend is Andrea. They are in their 50’s, and couldn’t be cuter. You can feel the love between them. It’s a very comfortable type of love. Nice to be around. We talk a lot during dinner about traveling, music, painting, and life. So refreshing to meet such great people and share a meal. And yes, the dinner was just as good as the lunch. We tried a typical fish appetizer that Annelisa recommended, and it’s unreal. So great. We get the prosciutto and melon again, and then cap it off with seafood pasta. Amazingness. After our dinner we head back to the main square near our BnB for a drink and then onto the club again. Not as fun as the night before, but still some crazy dancing. We meet some fun people from the UK and have a nice dance circle. We end the night around 4am and close out a fantastic last day together in Venice.
