No, It's Not (poem written on train from Venice to Vienna)

No, It’s Not
6/22/14

It’s not what you know
It’s how you learned it

It’s not where you go
It’s how you got there

It’s not when you arrive
It’s how you showed up

It’s not who you’re with
It’s whom you avoid

It’s not age that matters
It’s the wisdom of your years

It’s not how much you have
It’s how much you let go

It’s not the money
It’s the comfort

It’s not how you live
It’s how you overcome

It’s not the street that matters
It’s the direction you drive

It’s not always the same
It’s always the same game

It’s not notches in your bedpost
It’s how well you sleep at night

It’s not the hike that beats you
It’s the woods that get you lost

It’s not the flavor in the food
It’s the time you take to savor

It’s not the last thing you do in the day
It’s the first thing you think in the morning

It’s not the amount of hours you work
It’s the value of the time you’ve spent

It’s not how many people are around you
It’s who can’t live without you

It’s not the beat you’re playing
It’s the passion behind your music

It’s not the places you’ve been
It’s the places you feel at home

It’s not about having a light on when you get there
It’s about the warmth of the love inside you

It’s not a matter of time
It’s a matter of patience

It’s not the color of your skin
It’s knowing everyone is your kin

It’s not the peaks you climb
It’s the valleys you look down upon

It’s not the thrill of the hunt
It’s the hunted that kill your inside

It’s not the pictures you take with your camera
It’s the images emblazoned in your mind

It’s not the person you fall in love with
It’s the timing of when you met one another

It’s not winning that matters
It’s matter that wins the most

It’s not the Far East
It’s to the West too

It’s not about your culture
It’s the culture of your economy

It’s not the horse you’re riding
It’s how you treat it while you’re riding

It’s not the distance you cover
It’s the cover you need to distance yourself

It’s not how smart you are now
It’s how smart you’ve become

It’s not winning in the end
It’s ending the win with empathy

It’s not who’s on your team
It’s who’s in your corner

It’s not how many hours you’ve practiced
It’s the hours you practiced well

It’s not how well you know me
It’s…well…you know me

It’s not a wishing well
It’s well-wishers that foretell

It’s not the clothes you wear
It’s the wear in your clothes

It’s not the people you’ve met
It’s the people you can’t forget

It’s not the loss of love that hurts most
It’s the hurt of losing yourself

It’s not the direction you’re going
It’s directing those who’ve lost their way

It’s not what you say to me
It’s what I decide to hear

It’s not what you write
It’s who you show your writings

It’s not about death
It’s deathly scary not to live

It’s not time to end
It’s time to move on

It’s never me
It’s always we
